How to guide for submitting wood samples for testing

12 December 2022

Be prepared when sending us wood samples for testing

The Woodsure lab wants to ensure you have all the information you need to send us samples for testing, the team currently processes approximately 50 samples daily. It is important that wood samples are submitted to the lab following the requirements so that they can be appropriately and efficiently processed.

Unfortunately, when a sample doesn’t meet the minimum requirements, it can cause a failed result and require you to submit another wood sample. It’s very important to send a suitable sample the first time around so that you can avoid any additional costs for retesting.

Please use the following guidance to understand the minimum requirements for taking quality wood samples.

Firewood samples

  • Minimum of 3 samples from each product specification that you wish to have registered
  • Each sample should be between 6 to 10 inches and be a suitable size that you would use for firewood in a boiler or domestic stove
  • Each log should be 500g

Woodchip samples

  • Minimum of 3kg of Woodchip from each product specification that you wish to have registered

Packaging

  • Bag the samples to prevent the product from being compromised by outside moisture
  • Bag the samples separately from one another to ensure the lab team can easily determine which sample is which
  • Box the samples securely so that it’s less likely to become damaged in delivery and cause the sample to be compromised

Your details

Ensure that you include the supplied notice alongside your sample so the lab team can identify what the product is and where it has come from:

We have produced further guidance on taking a quality sample which can be found in the Fuel Manual Templates and Sampling Guidance section here.

Please keep in mind when submitting your sample that the lab is currently working on approximately a week turnaround from receiving a sample to having your test results ready to send to the registration team. Your results will then be processed and assigned to your registration by the office team. If you have submitted your sample and haven’t heard from us within a few weeks, please contact us for an update.

If you have any questions regarding the lab testing process, please contact [email protected].
