Helen Bentley-Fox’s Welcome | March 2024

With spring approaching, we find ourselves focusing on warmer weather, but keeping busy amidst a cold snap at the end of another busy heating season. In recent weeks we have communicated the most recent data from Defra on emissions of air pollutants in the UK, with the publication containing statistics on annual emissions for the period 1970 to 2022. The article examines the ways progress can be made, highlighting the importance of substantial and continuous action. Further, we recently examined the role of Woodsure in relation to the Office for Environmental Protection’s (OEP) annual progress report. The OEP’s report concludes that the current pace and scale of action is insufficient, and significant progress is required to meet government’s goals and targets.

It is crucial that we all work together to facilitate progress in improving air quality. Government have made it clear they are not considering a ban on domestic burning, but more must be done to reduce the resultant emissions. There are existing proposed policies and measures in place – these must be successfully actioned to ensure that the UK’s emission reduction commitments (ERC) are not missed. Recent reports and studies have determined that technological advancements alone are not sufficient to reduce domestic combustion emissions – responsible and sustainable practices are vital, with educated consumers setting the best example of how to minimise emissions.

In other industry news, recent months have seen new legislation passed in the Senedd. The Environment (Air Quality and Soundscapes) (Wales) Bill, passed on Tuesday 28 November 2023, saw the Welsh Government given greater powers to improve air quality and reduce noise pollution across Wales. You can learn more about the Bill here.  Last year also saw the much-anticipated publication of the government’s Biomass Strategy, which was swiftly reviewed by the National Audit Office. Keep up to date on latest news, developments, and legislation on the Woodsure website.

Ensure your fuel is maintaining your usual high standards as the heating season draws to a close. As the lab has historically seen a rise in test failures during this time of year, it is imperative that you continue to carefully measure your moisture content to keep meeting standards.

As an independent certification body with a purpose of ‘working together for a cleaner, safer and more sustainable environment’, we will continue our work with government departments such as Defra, DESNZ, and MHCLG to develop the work already undertaken by our industry to minimise emissions produced from domestic combustion.

Through our role as administrators of the Biomass Suppliers List, we have identified some uncertainty over which schemes can be used to demonstrate fuel quality under Schedule 4A of The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme and Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme (Amendment) Regulations 2021. We have created this article to assist you, providing information on which scheme is best for you. If you are still having difficulties understanding your certification, please get in touch with the team and we will be happy to assist you.

As always, the Woodsure team are here to support you with any questions or queries you may have.
